La Virgencita y La Puta: the Archetypes of the Latina Sexual Woman

About this Podcast:

Speaking with Jacqui about the archetypes Latina women regularly face, was very exciting.

  • Don’t be too sexual or you’ll be in trouble with religion or other groups of women.

  • Be sexual for the male gaze and heteronormative “success.”

  • Where in lies the encouragement to be sexual for herself?

About the Guest:

Jacqueline Mendez is an AASECT-certified sex therapist and sex therapist supervisor. She provides sex therapy supervision virtually to clinicians nationally and internationally. Jacqui is the founder of The Center for Relationship and Intimacy WellBeing, which serves clients throughout California and will soon launch in other states, and Latinx Sex Therapy, which supports sex education/therapy resources for the greater Latinx community. Jacqueline is integrative and holistic in weaving spiritual practices, multicultural rituals, and body-focused techniques with more traditional therapy modalities. She is a fierce advocate of sex positivity and is determined to make it easier for others to talk more about sex, pleasure, and relationships. She delights in breaking down sexual stigma and gender polarity in the Latinx/Latine community. Jacqueline also believes in the importance of revitalizing the soul of the healer—helping mental health clinicians in the practice of self-care. She regularly contributes to various media outlets and podcasts such as the New York Times, Univision, Telemundo, Refinery 29, Well + Good, and NPR, among others. A dynamic speaker, Jacqueline has spoken at various platforms, including the annual AASECT Conference and the Motion Picture Television Fund’s Deal With It Conference.
